One person has died and 11 others injured after a car "purposefully" ploughed through a crowd of tourists at the Venice Beach boardwalk in California. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

The victim that died in hospital was said to be on her honeymoon.

Witnesses reported seeing a man in his 20s get into his Dodge Avenger car, before driving onto the boardwalk and swerving back and forth, as if to hit as many people as possible, before fleeing the scene, reports ABC7.

One witness, Landon Blackburn, told the site: "The tyres started screeching... I saw him, and he was looking for blood. That guy, his intention was to kill people."

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told the LA Times: "The vehicle appeared to be moving purposefully down the boardwalk, according to witnesses."

A nearby jogger, Daniel Regidor, told the LA Times: "I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way.... Just a lot of people screaming.... It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air. When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied."

According to ABC7, one the LAPD has detained one person for questioning, and the suspect's vehicle has been located.

The Belfast Telegraph describes Venice Beach as "a cultural hub in a part of Los Angeles known for its eccentricities. It is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach".
