Man dies trying to rescue swimmers off Anglesey beach

A man has died after trying to rescue two swimmers who got into difficulty off a beach in Anglesey on Friday afternoon.

Police believe the man entered the sea at Broad Beach, Rhosneigr after seeing a man and a teenager in need of help.

According to the Daily Post, the teenager washed up onto the rocks and the man was plucked from the sea and airlifted to hospital where he is in a critical condition.

The man who attempted to rescue the pair was airlifted to hospital and police confirmed his death.

A North Wales Police spokesman told the BBC: "The Coastguard was initially alerted to an incident whereby two men were in difficulty in the water.

"At this stage it is believed that a third man entered the water to assist and got into difficulties.

"He was airlifted by Squadron 22 of the RAF to Ysbyty Gwynedd where he was pronounced dead.

"Police inquiries are on-going in a bid to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are working with our colleagues in other agencies.

"There is not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the Coroner will be informed."

Trearddur Bay RNLI volunteers told the Daily Post there were rising tides and rough seas.

A spokesman said: "Due to the rising tide and rough seas it was extremely difficult for the lifeboat to reach the casualty. The lifeboat tried to veer down onto the rocks so the crew member could transfer the casualty onto the lifeboat but the rough seas made the manoeuvre very difficult.

"An RNLI crewmember decided to jump into the sea and swim to the rocks to assist the teenager until the lifeboat was able to get closer to the scene."
