A five-year-old boy who was sucked into a drainpipe and carried 900ft while playing with friends has survived.

The Fort Myers News Press reports that the child ended up in the Caloosahatchee River, Florida.

He was able to climb to safety before his screams were heard by adults running towards the river.

Sky News reports that Battalion Chief Chris Bevan said: "He climbed himself out of the river. Climbed out before anyone found him. I want to say it was like a water slide.

"If he had gotten knocked unconscious, he could have drowned. He got really lucky."

The boy was taken to hospital and has now been released.

His father Brian Just told the News Press that he is doing well.

"He is a very resilient kid," Just said, "tough kid."
