Network Rail releases video of drunken train station accidents

A video of a drunken passenger going the wrong way on an escalator, one taking on a pigeon on the platform and another falling onto the tracks has been released by Network Rail in a new safety campaign.

More than 1,600 people have been injured in slips, trips and falls at 17 railway stations run by Network Rail in the past year and many occurred after nights out drinking.

Speaking to Sky News, British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Paul Crowther said: "Somewhat inevitably, drinking alcohol can impair people's judgment and co-ordination.

"Encouraging passengers to be more aware of their surroundings, particularly when they have had a drink, and to be alert to the inherent dangers that exist in stations will, we hope, reduce avoidable slips and falls across the network."

The campaign includes posters at Network Rail's 17 stations and video.

Robin Gisby, network operations managing director for Network Rail, told the BBC: "We do everything we can to make moving around our stations as easy and safe as possible but our teams deal with far too many people who have injured themselves where it appears alcohol has been a factor."
