Britain's balmy temperatures are set to give way to heavy downpours and thunderstorms this weekend - with the Met Office even issuing weather warnings.

Forecasters have warned of possible flash floods in Devon and Cornwall, as well as localised travel disruption.

Met Office spokeswoman Sarah Holland told Aol Travel: "We do have a warning out for the south east for Saturday into Sunday.

"An area of heavy showers and thunderstorms developing over France during Saturday will move northwards to affect at least parts of eastern and southeastern England later on Saturday or early on Sunday. These could also spread into parts of southern and central England.

"The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel due to surface water flooding. These showers will move northwards through the day."

And is it heralding the end of the heatwave? Sarah added: "The very warm temperatures have now left us but we are still seeing temperatures into the mid-20s through the weekend."

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, also confirmed Britain is facing a weekend of downpours. He told Aol Travel: "On Saturday, showers will soon spread across the Channel from France to southern counties and then move up across all of central and eastern England in the afternoon and evening to northern England overnight. Some local heavy downpours with thunder.

"On Sunday the risk transfers to south west England and south Wales, including southern and western Ireland as a trough moves west from the Atlantic. The risk of some heavy downpours with hail and thunder. Local flash floods possible over Devon, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire. Central and eastern England fairing a lot better with a fine day."

However, Leon was optimistic that warmer temperatures will return, adding: "A cooler and fresher feel in the UK for the first part of next week with showers. There are signs of another pulse of heat moving north by next Thursday though, with temperatures reaching 28C to 31C again in central and eastern England, possibly 32C in the south east.

"For those heading abroad beware some violent storms in France this weekend, moving to the Alps and southern Germany by Sunday night. Flash floods, large hail and even a tornado possible. Further East there will be a heat wave over the eastern Alps in Austria and also in Hungary for the Grand Prix. Temperatures in the high 30s on Sunday with up to 40C possible."
