A British tourist who was stabbed to death in the holiday resort of Malia in Crete on Tuesday has been named as Tyrell Matthews-Burton.

Fifteen Brits were arrested after the 19-year-old was stabbed to death after a fight in the Greek island seaside resort.

One 19-year-old British man is being detained for the attack.

Mr Matthews-Burton, from Leyton, was found with stab wounds outside a bar at 3am local time on Tuesday. He is believed to have died within minutes of the attack.

The AFP news agency reports that the victim was stabbed in the heart after the fight, which is believed to have involved up to 30 Britons.

The suspect will be detained until he appears before a public prosecutor.

Speaking in the Guardian newspaper, superintendent Constantinos Boukakis said: "There have been more than 15 arrests of Britons involved in the quarrel and, from what I know, they singled out the suspect as the man who wielded the knife."

Malia is a popular "party" destinations for young British tourists. In recent years it has outgrown holiday resorts such as Ayia Napa and Zante.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Malia, Greece, on July 23.

"We stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family"

Malia was the setting for the 2011 film The Inbetweeners Movie, featuring four teenage boys on their first foreign holiday without their parents.

Earlier this year British ambassador John Kittmer visited the resort to launch the Holiday Hangover campaign to raise awareness of problems that could arise while on holiday and to promote responsible behaviour, reports the BBC.

This is the first of this kind of incident this summer in Greece.

Last month, a
British teenager was stripped naked and stabbed while on holiday in Turkey.

And earlier this month, another tourist on holiday, also in Turkey, was attacked with a bottle.
