Video: Lewis Hamilton swaps F1 car for vintage racer

Lewis Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg swapped the modern luxuries of their high-tech Mercedes-Benz F1 cars for a slice of racing history recently.

Hamilton jumped behind the wheel of the 1938 Mercedes W154 originally manned by Rudof Caracciola, in which he won multiple Grand Prixs and famously stormed from 11th place to win in the pouring rain of Switzerland despite losing the visor to his helmet.
In the video, Hamilton is fitted with a GoPro camera and sent out on the famous Nordschleife circuit in Germany where he got to experience the 470bhp supercharged 3.0-litre V12 engine and a car that ran on ultra-skinny tyres.

Nico Rosberg is not far behind, piloting a 1954 W196, which just happens to be one of the most expensive racing cars in history, with Fangio's championship winner recently selling for £19.6 million at auction.

Take a look at the video below and appreciate what it must have been like for the racers of old, who had to make do with drum brakes and over 100 gallons of highly flammable methanol fuel on-board.

Hamilton's microphone is pretty dodgy but a full transcription of the video can be found on the YouTube page.
