Six-year-old survives being buried in sand dune

A six-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being buried under 11 feet of sand for more than three hours at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, US. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

The child reportedly fell into a hole at Mount Baldy on the shores of Lake Michigan on Friday evening.

According to USA Today, a fire official said an air pocket kept him alive.

Michigan City Fire Chief Ronnie Martin told WSBT-TV that firefighters felt the air pocket while poking around for the boy. He added that they then prodded something soft, saw the boy's head and pulled him out.

Hospital officials say the child is responding well to treatment.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the area around Mount Baldy has been closed off to beachgoers until Monday morning.

Mount Baldy is the tallest moving sand dune in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which covers 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
