Porsche's baby SUV slated for 2014 launch

Although the German marque is best known for creating brilliant sports cars, an upcoming mini-SUV dubbed the Macan is set to be the German marque's biggest-selling model when it goes on sale at the end of next year, with some industry insiders claiming it could shift as many as 75,000 units per year.

According to Autocar, the hottest mini-SUV in the line-up will be powered by a version of Porsche's new twin-turbocharged 3-litre V6 petrol engine that could produce as much as 400bhp.
Porsche's other SUV, the Cayenne, could be criticised for not being overtly sporting – despite potent Turbo models being available.

But the Macan, which has been spied by photographers on a number of occasions, looks to be lower and more aggressively styled than its big brother.

The other luxury compact SUV on the market, and the Macan's most obvious rival, is the Range Rover Evoque, which Porsche says won't be able to match the Macan's on-road abilities.

"We've surprised even ourselves," said Porsche development boss Wolfgang Hatz when speaking last year.

"It drives incredibly well and, from what we've seen from the competition, it will be the most sporting car in its class."

Prices are said to start at around £36,000 for the entry-level V6 petrol models but as with the Cayenne, Porsche is likely to offer the Macan in smaller, less powerful diesels and petrol engines.

There is no official launch date as yet but expect plenty more information to be unveiled over the coming months... perhaps as early as Goodwood next weekend.
