Video: Whale knocks surfer unconscious on Bondi Beach

This video shows the moment a surfer was accidentally battered by the tail of a whale on Bondi Beach, Australia, .

The whale had been frolicking near the shore of Sydney's most famous beach when one curious surfer came too close and was knocked unconscious by a mighty blow.

Bichhan Rajapaksi was dragged out of the water by his friends and treated by paramedics. He suffered injuries to his head and shoulder but has made a rapid recovery.

"Surfers, surfboards, swimmers were thrown into the air like skittles. I've never seen anything like it," said one onlooker, talking to BBC News. " The whole beach gasped."

BBC News says that record numbers of whales are swimming up Eastern Australia from the icy waters of the Southern Ocean to tropical breeding grounds.
