Wheels come off for Kwik Fit customer - literally!
Tracey Cooper had just collected her Saab 9-3 from the tyre & exhaust chain's Ashford branch having had two tyres fitted and an MOT test, when she heard a grinding noise from the front end. So she turned around to head back to the branch – which was when her nearside front wheel detached itself completely from the car, stranding her in the middle of a busy road junction.
A relative came to Ms Cooper's aid, performing a temporary repair so that the car could be limped back to the Kwik Fit branch, with local police providing an escort.
"Luckily we weren't going very fast because we were coming up to a traffic light but it could have been a lot worse," said Ms Cooper after the event. "We're lucky to be alive really – if we'd have been going onto the M20 we'd probably be dead. I'm just glad I didn't have my grandchildren in the car."
A spokesperson for Kwik Fit said: "We fully accept that our processes broke down in this case. We have apologised to the customer and have provided them with a replacement car and arranged for their car to be repaired.
"Although this is a one-off case we are carrying out a full investigation into how this incident occurred so we can ensure it cannot happen again."
