A British competitor in the Ironman France event on the French Riviera has died after crashing into a wall in the cycling section on Sunday, emergency services said.

AFP reports that the 30-year-old man went off the road on a corner and crashed into a wall in Tourrettes-sur-Loup in the countryside inland from Nice.

A helicopter was sent to take him to hospital but the Briton died of his injuries.

Ironman competitions are an extreme form of the triathlon. The event in Nice involved a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle and a 42km running marathon.

The Ironman France is the biggest annual triathlon meeting on the French Riviera, watched by sports fans, locals and tourists in the region.
