Scottish tourists are the UK's biggest holiday spenders

Scottish tourists spend more on holiday than other UK holidaymakers, a new report has revealed.

Research by the Post Office found that sun-seeking Scots pay 27 per cent more than other travellers in the UK for their holidays abroad.

Scottish holidaymakers spend an average of £707.92 - 20 per cent more than their planned budget of £588.89.

The Scotsman reports that meals, sightseeing and drinks were the biggest expenses, but Scottish tourists also spend 58.2 per cent more on visits to water parks that the UK average, costing £49.76.

The report found that on a week's holiday, Scots spend £27.89 on ice creams compared to the UK average of £22.23, and fork out £160.52 on eating out in contrast to £144.14.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, told the Daily Record: "The good news for Scottish families is that prices are down in many resorts – particularly for meals – but remember that pester power can soon empty the family purse so we recommend that holidaymakers set a budget and stick to it.

"Pack last year's lilo, snorkelling gear, towels and aqua shoes in the suitcase rather than waiting to buy them in resort and that could fund some pedalo rides or even a day out at a water park."

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria and Spain's Costa del Sol were revealed as the best value holiday destinations in the study, while Italy's Sorrento and Crete in Greece were the most expensive.
