Couple die of thirst in Saudi Arabia desert

A couple died of thirst in Saudi Arabia's vast Empty Quarter desert when they lost their way and their vehicle overturned.

Arab News reports that the Qatari couple ran out of water and died of dehydration under the burning sun.

The wife was found near the vehicle and her husband was discovered 10km away by a helicopter, the BBC reports.

A major search operation was launched when a relative raised the alert.

The Empty Quarter, known in Arabic as Rub Al-Khali, is known as one of the world's largest deserts. It takes up a fifth of the Arabian Peninsula, covering parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE and Yemen.
