UK enjoys hottest day of the year! But now comes the rain

Britain enjoyed its hottest day of the year by far on Wednesday - but experts are warning that showers will follow.

According to the Met Office, the top temp on 19 June was 26.4°C in East Sussex.

But the heat was short-lived and the UK now faces "unsettled" weather.

Sarah Holland told Aol Travel: "We have a couple of warnings in place for rain today (Thursday), one is in the south west and one in the south east.

"A very warm and humid continental airmass will cover much of southwest England. Some heavy showers or outbreaks of thundery rain are likely to drift northwestwards across the region. We could see 15-20 mm within three to six hours, with perhaps 30mm locally.

"In the south east, there is a low risk of isolated thunderstorms breaking out across southeast England, East Anglia and the east Midlands from Thursday, giving some intense downpours.

"These could give 15-20 mm of rain within an hour and 40mm within three hours very locally. However many places could stay dry."

Sarah added that the rain will continue over the next few days, saying: "The weekend is looking unsettled."

On Wednesday, Aol Travel reported how it is thought the UK could see its run of wet summers continue for around 10 years, thanks to a shift in the jet stream, possibly as a result of climate change.
