Hundreds of naked or scantily-clad cyclists took part in London's World Naked Bike Ride event yesterday, causing traffic delays around the capital.

The event, which takes place in 50 cities around the world, is intended to remind road users that cycling offers a solution to pollution and the shortage of fossil fuels, while raising awareness of the vulnerability of cyclists on the road.

Cyclists, many of who were using Boris Bikes, set off from five separate locations: Marble Arch, Regent's Park, King's Cross, Clapham Junction and West Norwood, before meeting up at Hyde Park Corner.

The Independent reports that the large numbers of cyclists and spectators meant that lanes were restricted in the Marble Arch and Park Lane area, and Transport for London tweeted that buses in the city centre were subject to delays as a result.

The Brighton leg of the Bike Ride takes place this afternoon. Organiser, Duncan Blinkhorn, told The Argus: "World Naked Bike Ride is the ultimate safety-in-numbers experience.

"We demonstrate that even with the vulnerability of being naked, together we can feel confident and have great fun cycling in the city.

"Research shows that if more people cycle, the safer and more confident they become on the road."
