It has emerged that David Cameron almost missed his flight to Ibiza last weekend, because he forgot his passport.

The Sun reports that the Prime Minister didn't realise that he had forgotten it until he arrived at the check-in desk at Gatwick airport. A member of his security staff then called No10, where staff retrieved his passport from a safe and delivered it to the airport in the nick of time.

According to The Telegraph, the passport was left behind because Mr Cameron thought that it was among papers being held by his bodyguard.

A source told The Sun: "It was a bit 'set of the pants' because the Prime Minister usually checks in late because of his busy schedule."

A Downing Street spokesperson has confirmed that police did indeed have to drive 30 miles to Gatwick to deliver the Prime Minister's passport - but did not indicate who was responsible for the oversight.

Mr Cameron's decision to take a family holiday to Ibiza so soon after the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich, has been widely criticised by some MPs and the media.

But, according to Metro, he is back at work today after his week in the sun.
