Tourist shot in Rio de Janeiro slum

A tourist on holiday in Rio de Janeiro has been shot and seriously wounded in the stomach.

Reuters reports that the German man was shot on Friday in one of Brazil's biggest slums, where drug traffickers control areas.

Frank Daniel Benjamin, 25, was with a friend in the poorest part of the Rocinha slum, which is not normally visited by tourists.

According to The Jakarta Post, Benjamin's friend told police the pair were shot at by a man in an alley when they became frightened and ran off.

Rio de Janeiro's health ministry said the tourist was treated for gunshot wounds, including one to his liver.

The shooting is one of a number of recent attacks on tourists in the 2014 World Cup host city.

In April, a holidaymaker was raped and robbed on a minibus while her boyfriend was handcuffed and beaten in the Copacabana area.
