A British tourist has been arrested at the Spanish resort of Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria for pouring boiling water on passers-by from the balcony of his 12th-storey holiday apartment.

According to The Local, travel company TUI tried to solve the problem without involving the police but when the man threatened to throw himself off the balcony, they were forced to call them.

Officers were unable to open the apartment door and saw a number of knives on a table from the balcony of a neighbouring apartment.

Digital Journal reports that when they tried to calm the Briton, he threw boiling water at the officers and onto the street below.

The police finally broke into the apartment and detained him.

In the kitchen, they found pots of boiling water on the stove and the bathtub was filled with hot water.

The man was taken to a psychiatric unit at a hospital.

Playa del Inglés is a popular resort on the south of the island famed for its long beach with tall sand dunes and lively bars and restaurants.
