Double decker bus roof ripped off by railway bridge in Chelmsford

A double decker bus has had its roof completely ripped off after hitting a railway bridge in Essex.

The Regal Busways bus hit the bridge in Duke Street, Chelmsford, at 16.30 on Thursday.

According to the BBC, three people were taken to Broomfield Hospital with minor injuries.

Essex Fire and Rescue attended the scene, but their assistance was eventually not needed.

One passenger, 16 year-old David McKay from Brentwood, was sitting on the top deck of the bus when the incident happened.

He told radio station Heart: "I saw the bridge and saw the height and just ran downstairs because I knew he [the bus driver] was going to hit it.

"I just didn't want to look back up or see if anything had hit me, I was totally scared.

"It felt more like you were on a rollercoaster, everything was shaking. It was really bad."

According to the station, the driver was treated for shock at the scene.

The Daily Mail reports that the driver has been reported for a motoring offence, meaning he could face prosecution.
