One dead after man runs through streets of Milan with pickaxe
CCTV footage shows a man, who has been identified as Ghanian immigrant Mada Kabobo, 21, running through the streets swinging a pickaxe and striking passers-by on the head.
Sky News reports that a 40-year-old man died after being struck on the head and abdomen. A man in his 20s, who was helping his father to deliver newspapers, and a man walking his dog were also injured. Two of the four people injured are said to be in a critical condition. Witnesses said that pools of blood "stained the streets".
BBC News reports that Mr Kabobo was in Italy illegally and had already been arrested for a number of offences, including theft and robbery.
When asked about his motive for the attacks, The Telegraph reports that Mr Kabobo was uncooperative. Police colonel Biagio Storniolo told reporters that the suspect "was not being cooperative. He says only that he is hungry and has no home."
He added: "Police blocked him with dificulty. He was in an evident state of marked psychological stress."
Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia said that the entire city was shocked that a man would do such a thing, "killing one and wounding several, even gravely, just because he ran into them on his path."
