A man, who was in his early 30s, was found dead on Towan Beach at Newquay, Cornwall, in the early hours of this morning.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that the man was found unconscious by a member of the public just before 2am this morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police said that attempts were made to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, who was visiting from Hampshire, has not yet been named.

A police spokesman said: "Next of kin have been informed but details will not be released pending formal investigation.

"At present, police are treating the death as unexplained and are appealing for any person who may have information about this incident to make contact via the 101 non-emergency telephone number."

Towan Beach is the western-most of four beaches in Newquay, and is the closest to Newquay town centre. It's one of the most popular beaches in the area and is adjacent to Newquay harbour.
