Bonkers 496bhp VW Golf GTI concept can hit 190mph!
Volkswagen has taken the wraps off an insane version of its critically acclaimed hot hatch at this year's Worthersee VW fan festival in Austria.
Loosely based on Golf underpinnings, the Design Vision GTI has 279bhp more than the standard model thanks to a twin-turbo 3.0-litre VR6 engine which could appear in future, albeit larger models.
Power is channelled to all four wheels resulting in performance that will humble supercars, with a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 190mph.
The heavily sculptured bodywork features widened rear wheel arches that extend up to the roof and honeycomb grilles that cover brake cooling vents.
At the front, headlights appear to menacingly stare out from behind the bonnet while skirts graze the Tarmac thanks heavily lowered suspension.
The striking looks are emphasised by the dimensions - the concept being nearly two metres wide but much lower than a standard Golf.
Volkswagen says the only rule they followed when designing the car was, "Pure GTI. Concentration on the truly essential. But with style."
Volkswagen also revealed that the concept's natural home is on the track, with carbon fibre and alcantara lining the interior while two crash helmets come with the car.
An onboard camera will also film the drivers' racing exploits and a dashboard display shows information on lap times, speed and other race details.
Unfortunately there is no plan for production, the concept instead just being a celebration of the GTI for fans of the brand at the annual meet in Austria.
