Thomas Cook holiday plane makes emergency landing after 'fire in cabin'

A Thomas Cook passenger jet had to make an emergency landing in Bermuda on Tuesday after the captain reported a possible fire in the cabin.

Thomas Cook Airlines Flght 149 was travelling from Cancun, Mexico, to Manchester with 338 passengers on board when the captain declared an emergency at around 8.20pm and diverted to Bermuda.

The A330 aircraft landed about 40 minutes later, with emergency personnel ready and waiting on the ground.

A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook told Sky News: "The emergency was declared as a precaution after smoke was noticed in the cabin.

"The plane landed safely and all the passengers are fine and being looked after. Tests will now be carried out on the plane and we hope to have everyone back in Manchester later today.

"As always, our passengers' safety is the priority in these situations, but we apologise to everyone on board for the inconvenience this has caused them."

According to the Independent, Lt. Jay Donawa, a spokesman for the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, said: "No injuries were reported and there was no fire on board when the aircraft landed."

The Mirror reports that the passengers were escorted safely off the plane, and had to stay overnight on the island before continuing on to Manchester Airport.

Back in October 2012, around 60 passengers had to disembark a Thomas Cook holiday plane via emergency chutes at Glasgow Airport after the cabin began to fill with smoke.

The TCX3549 flight from Dalaman, Turkey, carrying 239 people, landed as normal when the alarm was raised as passengers were disembarking.

Three chutes were released by the cabin crew to ensure the remaining passengers left the plane as quickly as possible.

It is thought the smoke was caused by excess oil in a power unit.
