A driver jumped out of a passenger train moments before it almost collided with a freight train in Canada.

The incident was filmed and posted on YouTube and shows the driver leaping off the VIA commuter train to save his life just seconds before the near crash.

It is not clear which train was at fault, but footage of the incident near Smith Falls in Ontario shows the freight train moving backwards slowly as the commuter train approaches, giving it enough space to stop.

But a spokesman for freight train company Canadian Pacific, told MailOnline they "have no record of such an incident this year" and that the "equipment in that video appears to be at least a decade old."

The spokesman added that the video could have been posted after a recent foiled terrorist attack on a VIA train in Toronto.

Last Monday, Canadian security officials arrested two terrorism suspects for plotting to derail a VIA passenger train travelling from Toronto to New York.
