Two French fishermen are missing in the English Channel after being washed overboard at 6.30pm yesterday.

BBC News reports that the men were not wearing life jackets when they fell into the water off the Isles of Scilly.

A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall and the St Mary's RNLI Lifeboat helped in the search, along with six French fishing boats, but the men have not yet been found.

Andy Cattrell, Falmouth Coastguard watch manager, said: "The two fishermen were wearing yellow oilskins, but no lifejackets or buoyancy aids when they were washed overboard.

"Sadly, despite an intensive search we have been unable to locate them."

This is Cornwall reports that the Falmouth Coastguard said it officially ceased searching for the men at 9.30am this morning.

According to the website MarineTraffic, the crew of the 25-metre fishing boat Neway had set off from Roscoff on Monday. She vessel was trawling about 50km North West of the Scilly Isles when the men were swept overboard.
