BMW Concept X4 unveiled
In another case of BMW filling yet another niche no-one even knew existed, the X4 is a coupe version of the existing X3 compact 4x4, and will be the fifth model in the company's burgeoning 'X' range of 'Sports Activity Vehicles' in BMW speak, or sporty soft-roaders to me and you.
Officially, it's only a concept for now, but as is the way with BMW concepts, expect to see a production X4 in a showroom near you next year, looking near identical to this 'design study'.
Exhibiting a sloping rear roofline, the Concept aims to impart some sporty pretensions to the X3 on which it is based, in the same way that the curiously styled - yet immensely popular - X6 did to the X5.
As is widespread in BMW design, the X4 has a 'cab back' design, with the cabin sitting towards the rear of the car's profile, giving a sporting stance.
The concept rides on eye-catching 21-inch, two-tone alloy wheels. Expect those and the exaggerated bumpers to be dialled down slightly for the production version, which is expected for market launch in 2014.
It will be built at the company's plant in Spartanburg, USA. Full price and specification details are expected to be confirmed closer to the X4's showroom debut.
