Uninsured 'dippy' crash mother walks free
Belinda Moreton crashed her Renault Megane into a parked car while attempting to perform a three-point turn and initially fled the scene, before returning the next day to coerce the owner into not reporting the crash.
At first gloating that she could get away with it by acting 'girly and all dippy', Moreton soon changed tack and attempted to convince her victim to blame the crash on his neighbour as she already had eight points on her licence, as well as being uninsured.
Unfortunately for her, the quick thinking owner made a recording of their conversation and informed the police, leading to her arrest.
Admitting perverting the course of justice and leaving the scene of an accident, Moreton was handed two separate jail terms of four-months and fourteen days, both suspended for two years.
She was spared immediate custody due to her dependent son. Steve Evans, defending, told the court: "She is young, very young and has serious responsibilities. I can see that this crossed the custody threshold but I would argue in her case that a chance can be taken with her."
Moreton was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.
Passing sentence, Judge Lynn Tayton commented: "The picture I'm getting here is somebody who seems to think it's perfectly all right to drive without insurance and pretend she is just dippy. I think you've been utterly manipulative, arrogant and stupid."
