It's supposed to be spring - but forecasters have confirmed that March is on track to be the coldest in 50 years.

While March 20 officially marked the end of winter, many parts of the UK will remain buried under a blanket of snow for some time to come.

The Met Office is warning the public to take care in icy conditions in swathes of the country, with snow predicted for the end of the week.

Friday will see a return of heavier snowstorms in the north, spreading into the Midlands.






Leon Brown from the Weather Channel says temperatures could reach minus 12 again within the next few days.



"We are now fairly confident that this March will be the coldest since 1996 and most likely since 1962. Temerpature anomolies are running at below -2C across much of the UK, and this weekend and much of next week will see bitter easterly winds keeping temperatures well below normal," he said.

"This weekend there is a risk of rain turning to snow from East Anglia and the Midlands northwards, with drifting snow over the Pennines and north York Moors on Saturday night."
