'Shoe revolution' as sales of flat soar

It is sometimes said that one must suffer in the name of beauty, and millions of women know only too well the pain associated with a pair of killer heels. So the news that flats are back with a bang will no doubt be music to the ears of many ladies.

According to industry insiders, women across the globe are ditching vertiginous footwear in favour comfort, and even designers are embracing the trend.

The likes of Burberry, Christopher Kane and Kurt Geiger are catering for style and comfort these days, and sales of flats have soared on the high street as a result.

Debenhams reports that sales of flat or low-heeled shoes have increased by 25 per cent in the last six months, John Lewis' comfortable shoe sales last week were up by 153 per cent on the same period in 2011, and at Kurt Geiger, low-heeled shoes now make up 60 per cent of sales.

Even Victoria Beckham - queen of the towering Louboutins - has been seen without her heels this year.

Rebecca Farrar-Hockley, creative director at Kurt Geiger, told the Daily Mail: "There's definitely a radical shift towards lower heels. Sneakers are really on trend.

"Girls are getting used to being able to run about and I don't think they are going back to the big high heels."

And Helen Attwood, footwear buying manager for Selfridges, hailed the trend as a "revolution", saying: "Out of all our footwear categories we are repeating orders mostly on flats and trainers. They are selling out across every price point."
