A heavy-sleeping guest at a hotel in America heard loud noises through the night but it was only when he woke up in the morning that he realised what he heard was gun shots.

TheBlaze reports that Reddit user walterwhitmanwhite woke up to bullet holes in his room at the Hilton Phoenix in Arizona on Thursday.

He later uploaded pictures of the room on Imgur in a post titled 'I nearly got shot last night and I didn't even know it.'

walterwhitmanwhite explained on Reddit that his room was on the third flood and two of the bullets 'entered near floor level, ricocheted off the ceiling and end up in the walls.'

He said police found a third bullet right next to his bed.

'All the bullets must have passed within a couple of feet of me. One might even have hit the side of the bed. The cop found the bullet in the photo next to the bed,' he added.

Another Reddit user encouraged him to demand compensation from the hotel, but walterwhitmanwhite said he did not hold the hotel responsible for what happened.

'Part of me wants free stuff cos, you know, FREE STUFF! But the hotel was not negligent. It's not like the gunman was inside the hotel property or anything, and they responded appropriately,' he wrote.

'They offered me enough loyalty points to cover the night's stay. I guess that is fair.

'I could have asked for more than one night but in the end there is no point being greedy and they didn't offer it.'

Sergeant Tommy Thompson of Phoenix Police Department told TheBlaze that someone fired 'several shots' through the windows of the Hilton Phoenix Suites at around 2.30am on Friday morning.

'No one was injured and it is unknown who or why the shots were fired. We don't know what type of gun was used either,' he said.

Sgt. Thompson added that he didn't expect any additional details to surface anytime soon.
