Amazing video: Birth of newborn killer whale captured on camera

One of SeaWorld San Diego's killer whales gave birth to a new calf on Valentine's Day and the amazing moment was caught on camera.

The Huffington Post reports that Kasatka the orca gave birth to her fourth calf at 6:33am on 14 February.

Trainers, vets and animal-care specialists were at the scene, which marked the sixth successful killer whale birth at the San Diego theme park.

The video showed Kasatka swimming around her pool with the tail of her newborn sticking out. The calf soon slid out and moved to the surface to breath for the first time before returning to its mother's side.

According to SeaWorld's blog, 37-year-old Kasatka carried the calf for 18 months and the birth was just a little over an hour.

The blog post read: 'Mom and baby appear to be doing well, but as with any newborn, the first days are critical. Zoological staff will monitor breathing and nursing round the clock.'
