British soldier missing on French Alps ski holiday

A British soldier has gone missing while on a skiing holiday in the French Alps.

Simon Daw, 26, of 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, was last seen at a bar just after midnight on Wednesday.

He had been enjoying a holiday in the resort of Les Deux Alpes with two friends, who alerted police to his disappearance when he failed to return to their hotel in the nearby village of Venosc.

Police said his friends had "not consumed an excessive amount of alcohol" on the night he went missing.

A police spokesman told walesonline.co.uk: "It is a mystery at the moment. We are searching on foot and from the air. We are very concerned about his whereabouts.

"'It has been very cold here. The temperatures at night have reached minus 15 degrees."

According to the Daily Mail, police, mountain rescue and helicopter rescue units are involved in the search for Simon, who is currently based in Chester but was born in Cardiff.

The news comes just days after 10-year-old British girl Jemima Prees died after crashing into a tree on a family holiday in the Tirol region of Austria.
