Police and coastguard officers in Dorset have issued a warning for the public to stay well away from Monmouth Beach on the Jurassic Coast following a landslide.

The Dorset Echo reports that the beach was sealed off by officials after a 300-metre stretch of cliff fell onto the shore on Monday morning.

Natural England and Lyme Regis Town Council also appealed for people to keep clear of the major landslip.

Tom Sunderland, of Natural England, told the Dorset Echo that the beach was likely to remain closed for the next few days until the danger passed.

'It is a reasonable landslide on Monmouth Beach,' he said.

'We have closed the beach probably for the next couple of days until it stabilises itself.

'The coastguard is down with the police, and members of the public need to stay away. That is the message.'

He added: 'It is way along the beach so there is no threat to any property.

'This stretch of beach is always unstable and people always have to take care but just occasionally we do get these quite impressive bits of movement and cliff falls which is what we are seeing at the moment.'

According to This is Cornwalll, geologists said the heavy rain in November weakened many cliffs along the Jurassic coastline.

Yesterday's fall follows an earlier landslip on 30 January, which blocked the access road to the beach. Persistent rain prompted police to close the road and warn people to stay away from the beach chalets.
