Cat finds its way home after going missing on holiday

A tortoiseshell cat called Holly has stunned her owners by walking 200 miles home, two months after she got lost on holiday.

The Mirror reports that Holly was on holiday in Daytona Beach, Florida, with her owners, Jacob and Bonnie Richter, when she ran away after being scared by fireworks.

The couple were devastated about losing their pet but, giving up all hope of finding her, they returned home to West Palm Beach, 200 miles up the coast.

Jacob said: "It was like losing a child. She'd become part of my life, not a pet but a family member."

But, 63 days later, Jacob was amazed when Holly was found in a garden just a short walk away from his home. Her paws were worn down, she had lost half her weight and was too weak to meow. He believes that she must have followed the coast road home.

Animal expert Professor Marc Bekoff, from Colorado University, told The Mirror: "She may have had a basic sense of direction and got clues from sights or sounds but the truth is we have no idea how she got home."

Unfortunately, not all cats have such a great sense of direction. A missing tabby called Bobby has been found in Cardiff, 150 miles from his home in Stoke-on-Trent, four years after he went missing.

BBC News reports that he was taken in as a stray by Lawrence Gwynn after he turned up on his doorstep last summer.

When Mr Gwynn recently took him to his vet he discovered that he was microchipped and was registered as missing from Stoke-on-Trent in 2009.

However, his previous owners can't be traced so Mr Gwynn is keeping him unless they come forward.

He said: "Nobody knows how he ended up in Cardiff, 150 miles away. One theory is that he got inside a vehicle like a removal van that brought him down here."
