A US Airways plane was forced to land moments after take-off on Wednesday afternoon after smoke in the cockpit was detected by cabin crew.

Flight 876 was taking off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport headed for Aruba, when smoke was detected at about 12.30pm, reports the Charlotte Observer.

The plane landed and taxied back to the gate with no injuries, but fire trucks and paramedics were at the scene as a precaution.

Passengers disembarked and were put on another aircraft to continue their trip.
