British holidaymaker dies after being 'hit with a rock' in Lanzarote hotel fight

A British holidaymaker has died after he was allegedly hit over the head with a rock during a fight at a Lanzarote hotel.

Alan Atkinson, 48, and his partner reportedly got into a row with another British couple at around 2.30am on Saturday.

Police were called to the Blue Sea Los Fiscos Hotel in the popular tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen, and the other couple were arrested, while Mr Atkinson was taken to hospital by ambulance.

On first sight, it did not appear that his injuries were serious, but he died after arriving at the Doctor Jose Molina Orosa hospital.

A spokesman for the Canary Islands ambulance service told The Sun: "It seems Mr Atkinson's injuries must have been internal as his injuries did not appear to be serious. We were told by the Civil Guard he had been hit in a fight at the hotel.

"We've heard he was struck by a rock but can't confirm that."

The hotel has not given a comment about the alleged fight, and the Foreign Office told the Daily Mail: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Lanzarote. We have informed next of kin and are offering consular assistance.

"We are also aware of the arrests of two British nationals and we are providing them with consular assistance."

This is the second time this month Puerto del Carmen has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. At the beginning of January, it was reported that an Irish man drowned in front of his wife and children during a New Year holiday in Lanzarote.

Ciarán Brown, 44, from Dublin, reportedly entered very "rough" sea at the resort and was pulled unconscious from the water, where lifeguards attempted to revive him while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Paramedics then took over, but they were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
