Road test: Vauxhall Mokka

Another manufacturer wades into the SUV market with a stylish, jacked-up 4x4 that is as at home on the busy streets of London as it is on the hills of the Lake District. The Mokka is a looker, albeit one with a silly name, but it's also expensive. Can it beat the Yeti's cheap charms?

What is it?

Vauxhall's late attack on the SUV market targeting the Yeti and Qashqai. There will also be a Chevrolet version badged as the Trax coming at a later date.> What's under the bonnet?

The Mokka is offered with a choice of two petrols and one diesel engine. Petrols start with the gutsy, if noisy 1.4-litre turbo with 138bhp (that we have here), or the very mediocre 113bhp 1.6-litre. The only diesel available is the 128bhp, 1.7-litre CDTi.

What's the kit like?

Buyers won't be disappointed, even the entry-level S includes air-conditioning, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, a CD player and cruise control. Exclusive adds climate control and Bluetooth, whilst Tech Line models get sat-nav. Range-topping SE has luxury features such as leather trim.

Any Rivals?

There are plenty in the SUV market but the closest on size and price is the Nissan Qashqai. The Nissan is one of the most popular cars in the UK and that's because it offers such a great drive, excellent reliability and plenty of interior space.

Is it any good?

After a general panning on the international launch, Vauxhall have reworked the steering and suspension for the UK market. The Mokka is now a generally composed handler, with more responsive steering. Although, it can still feel floaty over crests.

The AOL Cars verdict

It looks great, has a family-friendly interior and is reasonably priced. However, in this busy market, established rivals are more comfortable and fun-to-drive.
