Woman gored by rhino seconds after taking this photo on safari holiday

A tourist who got out of her jeep on a safari holiday to get a photo close to two white rhinos was gored in the back by one of the animals - just moments after the pic was taken.

Chantal Beyer, 24, a student from South Africa, was on a sightseeing trip at The Aloe Ridge Hotel and Nature Reserve, 30 miles from Johannesburg, when the attack happened.

According to Afrikaans newspaper, the Beeld, Chantal was told by gamekeeper Alex Richter it was safe to "get a little closer" for a better picture.

But just moments after this snap was taken, Chantal was gored in the back, suffering a collapsed lung and several broken ribs, according to The Sun.

Mrs Beyer is in an intensive care unit at a Krugersdorp hospital where she is said to be in a stable condition.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mrs Beyer's uncle and family spokesman Thom Peeters told the Beeld: "There were quite a few young people on the vehicle and they probably felt they could trust Richter, who was an adult."

The white rhinoceros is the largest of the five species of rhinoceros and the world's largest land mammal after the elephant.

Male white rhinos weigh an average of 5,100 lb, with the largest recorded weighing 9,900lbs.
