Up to eight inches of snow is expected to fall in Britain by the weekend bringing more travel chaos to the roads and rail services.

Showers and fog are also forecast, while parts of the country have already been covered by inches of snow this week.

According to the Daily Mail, families have been warned not to travel on Friday, when up to six inches of snow is expected.

Severe weather warnings have been issued and the Met Office has warned people to only leave the house if necessary.

Dan Williams of the Met Office told AOL Travel that 'heavy snow is expected to affect many areas on Friday bringing the risk of travel disruption.'

He said: 'An active frontal system is forecast to move in from the west on Friday, meeting the very cold air that has become established over the UK over the last few days.

'The far west (Northern Ireland, Cornwall and extreme western parts of Wales) are expected to have rain, but snow will fall over most other areas.

'Severe weather warnings have been issued for the heavy snow. An amber warning is in place for parts of Wales and western England where accumulations of 10 to 15cm are expected and 20cm or more over the hills.'

Mr Williams added: 'Over the weekend we will see less severe conditions but further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected to push in from the west at times.

'The snow that has fallen will be slow to melt and ice will continue to be a risk, especially at night.'

Meanwhile, The Weather Channel told AOL Travel that 'lighter snow is expected on Saturday and no real thaw with low temperatures across much of the UK.'

Leon Brown of The Weather Channel said: 'Freezing fog is predicted for Sunday and then more rain reaches the south-west later in the day with another 5 to 10cm across Wales and Midlands by Monday morning.'

He added: 'It looks like the cold weather will continue through next week, but with light snow showers and also freezing fog. Again there is the risk of some very low temperatures where there is snow on the ground and perhaps -15C or lower later in the week anywhere from Wales and central Britain to Scotland.'
