An English tourist who has only been in Australia for a week is reportedly lucky to be alive after being the victim of an 'unprovoked' knife attack.

According to Seven News, the 22-year-old was enjoying a night out with friends in St Kilda when he was attacked by a unknown man with a bladed weapon.

His most serious injury was a wound to the neck, which could have been fatal, but he was also stabbed in the arm and stomach, and had to have 44 stitches.

Detective Sergeant Ed Logonder told Seven News reporter Brendan Roberts :"It's lucky the wound to the neck wasn't any deeper because that could have been tragic."

"He's very shaken up," Det Sgt Logonder said. "He understands he's received some very serious injuries.

"It's been very traumatic for him. He's only been in the country a short time."
