Peugeot has released first pictures of its new compact crossover, the 2008, which adds to the rising number of models in this segment, including the Vauxhall Mokka, Nissan Juke and upcoming Ford Ecosport.

Based on the 208 supermini which launched last year, the car is due to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March before going on sale in late summer.
Taking the idea of a supermini and adding more ride height and ruggedness, the 2008 follows the model naming from the 3008 crossover and the 5008 MPV.

Peugeot says the car has been designed to combine "the driving characteristics of a hatchback with the strengths of an SUV".

The carmaker continues that the rear design is inspired by the "double-bubble roofline of the RCZ sports coupe" and "optimises aerodynamic performance with an integrated spoiler".

Emissions are expected to start from a competitive 99g/km thanks to an e-HDI diesel unit as well as new three-cylinder petrol engines.

Peugeot product director Xavier Peugeot said: "With the 2008, Peugeot is continuing its product offensive and capitalising on the success of the 3008 by offering a new crossover, urban and innovative, to win over an international clientele."

The car will be produced close to its respective markets, in France, China and Brazil.
