Family stranded for entire week over Christmas at UK holiday cottage

One family's luxury Christmas holiday turned into a bit of a nightmare when they were left stranded inside their cottage for the entire week.
Simon Hughes, 44, and his extended family, including eight adults, four children and a dog, had paid about £2,500 for a week in The Ferryman's Cottage in the hamlet of Uckinghall near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
But what was meant to be a bit of Christmas fun turned a bit wishy-washy when the River Severn burst its banks, leaving them marooned inside the cottage looking out at waist-deep water.

Mr Hughes was with his partner Lecia Watts, his children Alex, 10, and Charlie, two, his father Terry, 72, and his partner, Linda.
Simon's mother Pam, 71, was also there with his sister Becky Stevens, 47, her husband John and their children Ben, 11, and Meghan, 10.
Simon's aunt Kris also joined the group with the family dog Peggy, a seven-year-old Patterdale Terrier.
The family seemed to see the funny side of it, keeping themselves amused with board games and treasure hunts, according to the Daily Mail.

Although Pam did admit being cooped up with her ex-husband and his partner was a bit of a "strain", but told the Daily Telegraph: "Looking back on it, I enjoyed it really. We were all together, we had fun, and it didn't really detract from Christmas itself.
"It would have been nice if we could have got out. I like walking and I like being out with the children – on that side of it, we were getting a little bit stir crazy by the end of the week."
However, the family did have their Christmas presents and plenty of food, the heating and electricity continued to work at the cottage, and a neighbour with a small boat was able to take a few of them into Uckinghall so they could visit the pub and stock up on supplies.
They were eventually rescued on Saturday by the West Midlands Search and Rescue, but they may have to wait up to 10 days before they can return to pick up their cars.
