After a tough year, high street stores and online retailers are looking forward to a Boxing Day bonanza as shoppers eye up sales bargains.

The weekend has already seen hundreds of thousands of Brits rushing out for last-minute present buying, and according to retail experts, the sales will entice even more consumers to spend their hard-earned cash.

Shoppers left it late this year, but it's estimated that the weekend rush saw Britons spend an astonishing £5 billion over the course of the two days.

And it's thought up to 10 million will brave the bad weather come Boxing Day to spend an estimated £2.4 billion.

According to the Annal Sales Spending Report, almost one in five will have spent all their Christmas cash within just 24 hours, and 10% of Brits are prepared to queue for two hours to bag a few Boxing Day bargains.

Despite criticism, many online retailers are even starting their sales early. Amazon is hoping bargain hunters will be in the mood to spend on Christmas Day itself, and the online giant begins its sale at 9am tomorrow.

And the likes of Currys, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser and Argos will be starting their internet sales either today, tomorrow or first thing on Boxing Day.

Overall, online retailers expect to take £307 million on Christmas Day - a rise of 50 per cent on the average shopping day.
