A woman was killed and a man was critically injured when they were hit by a car while standing at a bus stop on Streatham High Road in Streatham, London yesterday morning.

The Daily Mail reports that the accident happened just ten minutes after the driver made off from an earlier collision.

The first incident took place at 5.20am when a Volkswagen Passat hit a tree in Croydon and the driver was seriously hurt. Police believe that an Audi A3 car stopped at the scene and the driver got out of the car. But when plainclothes policemen who had been on duty nearby identified themselves, the driver returned to his vehicle and drove off.

Then, at 5.30am, the Audi hit two people waiting at a bus stop. A woman, believed to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition.

Scotland Yard said that the driver of the Audi left the scene on foot before police arrived, leaving his car behind.

The Mirror reports that the women who died has been named locally as Vanessa Chango. She was on her way to work when the accident happened.

A resident who lives near the bus stop told The Mirror: "I was sleeping when I heard a really loud bang and screaming and crying. I went to the window and it was chaos.

"An Audi had crashed into a wall and I could see a lady on the ground. She was covered with a blanket but alive.

"There was a guy of 40 or 50 under the rubble. He had a gash on his shoulder and was taken to hospital.

"The car looked a complete write-off. People were crying. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's just too awful, especially just before Christmas."

So far, no arrests have been made.
