A man has been rescued after his fishing boat caught fire two miles off the East Sussex coast.

Distress flares were spotted coming from the the 27ft cruiser Knowwanda at about 10.30am on Tuesday.

Two lifeboats attended the scene, and the angler on board was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, according to the report on the BBC.

The fire was put out after the boat was towed to the beach east of Eastbourne Pier.

The vessel was beyond repair and left abandoned on the beach.

The news comes as just on Tuesday the RNLI were put into action after a pensioner died and another was injured when their dinghy capsized in the sea 300 yards off Thorpe Bay, Southend.

The two men, aged 71 and 73, were pulled from the water by Southend RNLI after Thames Coastguard received a number of calls from worried members of the public.
