Road test: Toyota Aygo


The Aygo has been around for a while and has cute looks and a respectable badge on its nose. But does a facelift keep it desirable in the city car sector?

What is it?
Like its Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 siblings, the Toyota Aygo has been around since 2005. That's a long time in the car world so the Japanese firm has given its city car a makeover (along with Peugeot and Citroen with their 107 and C1 models). The new Aygo gets a more chiseled look to the front-end while our test car also had very bright day-time running lights fitted. A tweaked 1.0-litre engine is now better for the environment.
What's under the bonnet
It's the same engine when the car was launched in 2005, but Toyota's engineers have been set to work to make it a little kinder to trees. The 74bhp three-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine now gives free road tax (thanks to it emitting 99g/km of CO2) and a combined MPG figure of 65.7 – up four MPG.

What's the kit like?
The standard equipment list for the entry level "Aygo" and "Aygo+" models remain unchanged from the pre-facelifted Aygo, and cost £8,495 and £9,095 respectively. However the range now sees two special editions: "Ice", from £9,895 and "Fire" (pictured) from £9,595. Our test car was a "Fire" which comes with 14-inch alloys, front foglamps, LED day-time lights, rear privacy glass, leather steering wheel and gear knob, and a rev counter.


Any rivals?
There are many. If you're considering the Aygo you should be looking at its sister cars (107 and C1), the Renault Twingo, Hyundai i10, the Kia Picanto, Fiat Panda and the Chevy Spark. The VW Up, Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo provide the stiffest competition – and the Citigo is our favourite city car in terms of price and packaging.

Is it any good?
The 1.0-litre unit feels great in the city, but on the motorway speeds it is noisy. The lack of steering feel is frustrating, and the Aygo rolls too much and loses grip too easily to be fun to drive. Once upon a time the interior was quirky, but now the plastics seem a little on the cheap side.

The AOL Cars verdict
While the Aygo is a likeable car, it looks rather good and costs pennies to run, it is starting to show its age. It's not cheap either so we'd spend our money on something that is newer - like the Skoda Citigo for instance.
