An elderly man had a very lucky escape after driving his motorised scooter off the platform and onto the tracks of the Docklands Light Railway.

The man was waiting for a train at West Ham station in east London when he seemingly drove his buggy onto the tracks as a train was approaching.

Luckily, the driverless train managed to stop in time, a few feet away from the man.

According to the Daily Mail, one witness, @CoralieBarnes, tweeted: "Some guy lying slumped half over the side of the platform at West Ham DLR."

The fact that the train managed to stop could give the driverless train doubters a reason to think twice.

The trains are automatic and effectively drive themselves, although there is a "captain" on board who can operate emergency controls if needed.
