A railway employee has been killed by a passenger train while working on a track in Lincolnshire.

The man, thought to be 26 and from Doncaster, was hit at Sykes Lane, near Saxilby Station at 13.55 on Tuesday.

British Transport Police said the man, who has not been named, was struck by the 11.19 passenger train from Scunthorpe to Lincoln Central.

Northern Rail confirmed it was one of their trains that hit the man, who was a contractor for Network Rail.

According to This Is Lincolnshire, a spokesman for Network Rail said: "Tragically at 1.55pm today a contractor working on behalf of Network Rail was fatally struck by train at Sykes Lane, Saxilby.

"Investigations are ongoing into what happened but our thoughts are with the family."

Bob Crow, general secretary for the RMT union, told the BBC: "A health and safety officer is actually at the site, getting investigation details of what has happened."
