One-of-a-kind Maserati 150 GT up for sale
Many classic cars claim to have race car heritage, but none more so than this ultra-rare, pre-production prototype Maserati 150 GT Spider. Due to go to auction in California in January, it's expected to fetch a cool £2.5million.
'Little Rocket', named by the current owner for it's impressive power-to-weight ratio thanks to 195bhp and weighing in at just 860kg, then returned for further work in 1957 and was subsequently mechanically reconfigured and rebodied with the lightweight aluminium body it wears to this very day. However, the pre-production prototype remained a one-of-a-kind example, proving too costly for mass production and the 3500 GT carried Maserati forward instead.
This amazing tale came about when the current owner found the 'matching numbers' car, with identical engine, gearbox and chassis identification numbers, failed to correspond with the cars original documentation. Following some detective work with a Maserati historian, the cars true identity and amazing story was uncovered.
After being lovingly restored by Steve Hart since the current owner took ownership of the car in 2006, it has now been passed on to Gooding & Co. auctioneers for sale, and is expected to be a popular item in the January auction. Prices are anticipated to reach in excess of £2.5million.
